Jochen Lempert, Phenotype
Phenotype is the first comprehensive monograph dedicated to the photographic work of the German biologist Jochen Lempert’s, spanning from the 1990s until today. Divided into thematic chapters and completed by a rich section of texts, the book offers an overview of Lempert’s distinctive black and white depiction of animals, plants and humans.
Lempert’s method, although clearly determined by his scientific background, reveals a delicate, intimate relationship with animate and inanimate elements, which he combines in beautiful harmony according to formal analogies and visual associations. The author’s own microcosm takes shape, ranging from grainy everyday views to abstract details, from highly contrsted images to the whitest pages.
Phenotype followed Jochen Lempert’s major retrospective exhibition at the Hamburger Kunsthalle (Hamburg), thanks to which he was nominated for the prestigious Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2014.
