de-FORMATIONS
The group exhibition de-FORMATIONS includes and takes inspiration from the series The Distortions by André Kertész, the most striking and unsettling work of the visionary author, which was produced during the 30s as an assignment for the illustrated magazine Le Sourire. On that occasion, Kertész portrayed two models making use of carnival mirrors, transforming their naked bodies into surreal visions.
The conception and representation of the human body as a malleable, fluid form – be it expressed through painting, sculpture, collage or photograph – is the central theme of this intriguing exhibition, presented by Bruce Silverstein Gallery in New York and curated in collaboration with Damon Brandt.
The presented artists, active in different periods from the 30s to today, are Jean Arp, Richard Artschwager, Romare Bearden, Louise Bourgeois, Constantin Brancusi, Asger Carlsen, John Coplans, Alberto Giacometti, Antony Gormley, Sarah Lucas, Robert Mapplethorpe, Ana Mendieta, Henry Moore, Rona Pondick, Marc Quinn, David Smith, Frederick Sommer, Joel-Peter Witkin, Silvio Wolf and Francesca Woodman.
